On April 28, 1867, twelve women joined together to form a secret college society for women, not knowing what the future would hold. That society was founded as I.C. Sorosis at Monmouth College in Monmouth, Illinois. More than 140 years later, those 12 women have touched the lives of more than 241,000 members across North America. Pi Beta Phi was the first national secret college society of women to be modeled after the Greek-letter fraternities of men. At a time when few women were admitted to colleges and unversities, Pi Beta Phi created a feeling of unity among pioneering women. Today, we still gather in Monmouth, Illinois as members of the Monmouth, IL Alumnae Club. We are honored to walk in the footsteps of our founders and hope we create that same feeling of unity among our members.
